b.  A big thank you for an incredible job done well goes to our newly retired Mayor Francie Olachea. Francie worked tirelessly, passionately and with great heart for Los Barriles while she served our community over the past three years. She passed the torch at the end of November but not before setting a high bar and new standard for future mayors to follow. She cared for kids, worked with the schools, made sure the summer program was funded. She advocated for old folks and for those in need and all the while balancing the demands of a staff of 25 and a big jurisdiction that stretches from north of El Cardonal to the south mountain pueblos of El Coro and Corral Falso up past the basurera and to San Bartolo as well. She wore out tires on her personal vehicles constantly driving to La Paz to make sure the jewel of Los Barriles and her extended communities were getting the attention and allocations they deserved. It’s from the heart that Francie served and we’re so much the better for it. She’s due our thanks and recognition and also now, a nice rest. East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education would especially like to say thanks for being such a great partner and making us proud to have worked together.  Theresa

a.  Please help! 9 am, December 27, at the Recycling Storage Space behind the DIF building and to the south of Tio Pablo’s. Unknown sources have piled high their boxes and now they need to be broken down and stacked so we can prepare them for shipping to our recycler in La Paz. Bring your gloves and bring your smile and in a short time we’ll have it ‘boxed’ and sorted so that we can get back to using this Storage & Transfer Space for it’s intended storage use. Regular Recycling is the first Thursday of the month, 9 am to 11 am at the Recycling Center at East Cape Casas & RV Resort. We appreciate you ONLY recycling on this day.

DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  Watch out !  17 years of driving the Baja up and down many times each year and we have never had a problem until last week.  Pulling an open box trailer & heading south we stopped at the military inspection point a few miles north of San Ignacio around 7 pm.  We were asked to exit the SUV and were immediately separated with one of us on each side of the vehicle being questioned by an officer, showing our drivers license, never asking for our passports but were asked an unusual amount of nonsense details over and above the norm. Meanwhile 3 other military personnel were going through everything in the vehicle. They never removed a suitcase or box instead opening everything inside a very heavily packed vehicle (with lightly tinted windows). When it seemed like the officers questioning us could not think of any other questions, one of the 3 inspecting personnel would get something, a prescription out of our shave kits, aspirin, Benadryl even lightbulbs we had brought down and step way back from the vehicle, call us over with our back to the car an ask the most unimportant details or questions about the item. The practice was repeated multiple times by each of the three and as soon as one of us were not busy, one of them would instantly call us over to explain details about another item. This went on for 10 min with each person going through the car having some item and calling us away from the car to discuss it. Never once did they look in the trailer, nor did we see them look in the console or glove compartment. When we finally left my friend checked the small zippered binder that he had his cash, paperwork and passport in, glanced in and saw his US dollars as well as his pesos so he thought all was good. Later that night when we stopped at the motel, he discovered a large amount of money missing ($2,000 USD!) from his binder. We then started going through each suitcase, box and bag only to discover many items of value were missing.  Yes, we should have pulled the cash out with us to begin with. Up to this point we had not even been asked to exit the vehicle at any of the stops.  You can’t remove everything of value and keeping us both distracted and away from the vehicle we should have known something was not right.  Beware drivers!!  This was a blatant, sophisticated and choreographed robbery from five men two whom were officers with loaded assault rifles.  Wow!

(2) note by the same author as above:  I just had friends stop yesterday afternoon at the same checkpoint and she said she told them she could not exit the vehicle due to a leg/hip injury. The gave her some  @?!@  about it but she ended up staying in the car while her husband was questioned at the rear of the vehicle.   It’s just sad and I have always seen the marines as above this type stuff. I should have stayed on my toes and not dropped my guard. Won’t happen again.

(4)  Unbeknownst to most travelers in Baja, you have the legal right to tell the soldiers at every stop that only one person at a time (una persona a la vez por favor) may search your car. I lock all doors, and open them one at a time and watch closely. I’ve been doing this for years, they always respect my request.

b.  Do Not Use Your Remote Control Door Lock In Parking Lots We shopped at Costco last Thursday and parked in the handicapped parking. A man was on his cellphone on the sidewalk in front of the truck and we locked the truck with the remote. We returned to find the truck locked but two items were missing. We are sure he was using a code reading app on his phone, unlocked the doors, took what he wanted and relocked the doors. a.  Today December 22, we spotted a young Humpback whale entangled in rope and a Styrofoam float of one of the shark buoys. We were just to the east of Puenta Pescadero. We attempted to get the boat close enough to free it but were not successful. It was swimming too fast to go into the water with it but if anyone spots it in the next few days it will be tired and perhaps not swimming so fast. c.  Yesterday we went to pay our fido at Banorte bank behind La Comer in San Jose, I had the correct amount of $464.00 dollars. I gave the money to the teller and the money disappeared behind the desk, one minute later he shows me the 4 dollars and gives me back $404.00 telling me that $60 dollars are missing. So I paid $60 more. I asked for the supervisor, therefore together with the Teller they counted the money at his station with the machine. Then they tell us that everything is correct. Of course everything was correct because the original $60 dollars were in the teller’s pocket to buy a Christmas present. I do not believe I’m the only one who was robbed by this guy, Let me know. DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  The Amazon Echo series of devices has a very useful skill that many have overlooked.  Yes, they do work down here!  When we leave for the evening or a day trip, we tell the Echo (aka Alexa) “Away Mode”.  The Echo will begin to play random voices in conversion that often have music or TV playing in the background.  It really sounds as if someone is in the house.  Okay, I’m a Geek and have no real life, I often find those conversations somewhat interesting.  In addition, I use Nest Cams that send an alert to my phone along with a photo if someone enters my area.  When I’m gone for longer periods, I set the Cams to record to the “Cloud” so that I can review footage from anywhere I may be.  Wyze Cams are much cheaper and record to an internal SD card that can be reviewed or played for the police. (2)   (Sat 12/15) shortly after 1 pm a young clean cut looking Mexican man came to our house looking for work (clean our yard)  However He walked past our door heading toward the back yard but looked in the kitchen window & saw Pete where he was sitting at our desk.  He turned around and I met him at the door where he asked for work.  After he left Pete read the notice about the guy in Buenos Aires earlier.  He was dressed in black pants that sound like the ones described, and a grey shirt.  He did have a black backpack. I told him that we had a yard man.   He quickly left and went on his way.  Just information.

b.  Copied from the Gringo Gazette:  “Bad News For Gringa Ladies” The Supreme Court will examine a proposal this week that would make it mandatory for you to pay social security benefits to your domestic worker. Your very reasonably priced housekeeper, gardener, hard working folks like that.   The law as it stands has resulted in most domestic workers not receiving benefits that other employees are legally entitled to. The proposal argues that there is no constitutional justification to exclude the mostly female workers from the social security system and that it is sexist.  Translation: You will need to figure out the social security system in Spanish, calculating what taxes you should pay on your once a week lady. The average foreigner will need to hire an accountant. If this law passes, and you don’t comply, your housekeeper is going to sue you right out of your flip flops, doesn’t matter how nicely you get along now. She will use the law against you.
