a.  Protection:  There is a chemical weapon that far exceeds Mace, Bear Spray, etc.  It is called Asp.  The Asp Key Defender is highly recommended as an alternative to the latter.  Google it.

b.  East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education is looking for coffee cans or any other like sized metal containers. We’re also looking for any left over metal ‘lamina’, the light weight corrugated metals that’s often used on roofs. We provide them both to the families camping on the beach. The coffee cans are used to contain cigarette butts and the lamina is cut into one meter square pieces and the families use them under their camp fires. These strategies help maintain our beautiful pristine beaches during our very busy Semana Santa Week. Please drop to recycling headquarters at the office at our newly named ‘Baja’s Resort at East Cape’ (previously East Cape Casas & RV Resort) through the green entrance and the ‘Be Awesome!’ signs.

Once again we are creating a super fun incentive program for the children and their families that are camping on the beaches during Semana Santa. We provide white bags for recycling and black bags for trash to all those camping along our East Cape beach frontage. Each day children bring their full recycling bags to the event center and receive a complimentary gift to thank and reward them for their participation in our recycling program. This has been an ongoing effort for the past five years, in addition to the coffee can containers and the camp fire lamina. They are welcomed by our visitors celebrating this important family holiday and appreciated as we continue to raise awareness about our precious natural resources. East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education is proud to lead up this program and appreciate all your support to help us raise money and environmental awareness. If you would like to donate a box of bags, white or black, or coffee cans or lamina, please drop to the ‘Baja’s Resort at East Cape’ office.

a.  Has anyone any experience with the 3D Dentist in LaPaz?  It’s called CEREC and uses the digital imaging technology called CEREC OMNICAM 3D to make crowns while you wait. I have friends who have had crowns done in Europe and the US with this technology and are very happy. a.  RoadReport Hwy One:  Road Report: Rough road and many potholes between Guererro Negro and Catavina. One Way Traffic Control due to road construction 40 miles south of Ensenada. Crews work through the night and also on Sundays so its hard to avoid. We were held up 2 hours there. Then about 10 minutes north of the construction site there’s a military checkpoint so be prepared to wait in line again there.

b. 4 Excellent responses in regards to pepper spray, mace and wasp spray.
It’s leaning that they all are legal but…use wisely. You must be in imminent danger fearing for your life or you can be charged with harming another person. Pepper spray is available on Amazon-Mexico and can ship to your house.  Excerpt from one email: “My solution was to buy a canister of bear pepper spray; it’s a lot stronger than normal pepper spray. I removed the “pepper spray” label and created a label in Adobe Illustrator that celled it a fire extinguisher. I called it Halon because they’re a smaller extinguisher. The can is about 8-inches tall. I keep it in the pocket of my pickup so that it’s always ready. Never had to use it. Numerous military guys picked it and examined it, but never figured out my ruse”

e.  Club de Pesca Cabo del Este invites the community to join together to celebrate the 8th annual “Dia del Nino Kids Fishing Tournament”, Sunday April 28 from 7am – 12 noon at Lazy Daze Beach Bar. a..Centro de Salud Repair Project – update!  We are almost there!  Please help with the last donations needed to support health services for our local community families at Centro de Salud.  We have most of the materials now except curtains, curtain rods, bed linens – anyone have a king size bed frame? ( as we had a king mattress donated), ….. We still need about $ 2000 to get these repairs underway so Centro de Salud can have the night /on-call Doctor and staff.  Thank you for the most recent donations from William Harnecker  of Playa Norte Trailer Park, Jorge Ayala Architect, Dan Clemens, Regina Hidalgo, Maureen Stroud and others I may have missed who have stepped up for financial or material donations this week. A special thank you to Bill Klotz and Brian and Michelle Huey for their very generous assistance.  A flood rendered the Centro de Salud sleeping areas uninhabitable.  The local clinic can get a night Doctor and staff to service the growing community if we can fix this area. b.  I received a number of clearly spam calls identified as coming from the country of Jordan.  In searching the methods of blocking such spam calls, I found the following:
This is specific to iphone
1.  create a contact:  I called mine “Spam” and noted country of Jordan as the company
2.  enter +and the country code.  In my case +962
3.  Block that contact.  You will then block all calls from that country.
I had 9 or 10 calls at random times over several days from random numbers from that country.  Since I did this, I have had none.  Hope this helps

a.  A theft in a hotel room occurred  on the night before our friends were leaving.  They had hidden their required 10% tip amount in the room, went out to dinner and came back to find things rummaged through.  The tip envelope they had prepared to take to the front desk the next morning was found, cut open and the money taken.  Certainly someone who knew the hotel policy and had a key to enter. b.  Thursday evening April 11, we parked in the LaPlaya/Exotikite parking lot from 615 to 815 pm for a lovely dinner at LaPlaya. We were the only diners at LaPlaya but a number of vehicles were parked at Exotikte. We came out, all those vehicles were gone as well as all of the gas in our tank. BCI has joined forces with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Paulina is in charge of the ‘Education to Action’ program in Baja with the high school from Santiago and Los Planes. This pilot program included sending teachers and principles to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for training last summer. Paulina will share about this program. She is also integrally involved in the new law banning plastics in Southern Baja including straws, bags and non biodegrable take away containers. She will also discuss Baja’s implementation program for the law that will go into effect this summer. The documentary ‘A Reef Reborn’ was sponsored in part by the San Diego Historical Museum and is the history of the now 22 year old marine park program which sets the standard world wide for recovering a once depleted fishery. Please join us for this great night.

e.  Via the Ventana View:  While there are more than 325 distinct hummingbird species in the world, La Ventana/El Sargento is home to only four. Ninety-nine percent of our hummers are Costa’s hummingbirds, but we also get the odd Anna’s and Rufous hummingbirds and there are special habitats with rock nettle in our area where one can see the endemic (only found here) Xantu’s hummingbird. Here are some interesting factoids about hummers. Weighing less than a nickel, they have about 1,000 to 1,500 feathers, the fewest number in the bird world. They can fly in all directions, flapping their wings between 50 to 200 times a second and reaching speeds of 60 mph in a dive. With the passing of each minute, their heart beats 1,200 times and they take 250 breaths. Their eggs are the tiniest in the bird world, smaller than a jelly bean. b.  Semana Santa here in Los Barriles is April 18th – 20th.  This is a celebration/festival of sports for the Holy Week.  There are volleyball tournaments and other fun and games for everyone – this year with more of a festival atmosphere.  One new addition this year is a boat light parade.  This ‘light parade’ is April 18th at approximately 8pm.  Mayor Luis is inviting everyone to get out their paddle board, kayak, zodac boats, tin boats or canoe and decorate it up with lights and join the parade along the shore. There will be a prize for the best decorated/lite boat….. so get your thinking caps on!  Think of the festival of lights boat parades like in Seattle, Newport Beach and Lake Havasu…without the yachts!!!  The ‘festival’ grounds are from Don Pepe to Costa Brava.  There will be live music before the boat parade.   Parking available on the beach – in a marked area.  Watch for details on FB and the BPE.  Posters are around town with more details too.  Get planning your lite entry!

c.  This is International Dark Sky Week, an event to help individuals protect the wonders of the night sky.   Almost 20 light pollution reports have been posted so far from the Cape Region by concerned citizens. The data shows the night sky is darker in El Sargento and La Ventana as a result of new shielded LED street lights.
