Pat Knipe:  Beloved by family, friends, and former students; remembered lovingly as a “remarkable human” of “kindness and grace” whose “gentle face and beautiful smile looked out with love and light”, a “most caring individual who made everyone feel special”; Patricia Lee Knipe passed away April 19, 2019 at age 73.              Born to parents Richard and Betty Erath on November 15, 1945, Patty grew up in Southern California, a 1963 graduate of Edgewood HS in West Covina.  She attended Mt. SAC College and University of Oregon, earning a teaching certificate and Masters in Art Education.              She married the love of her life, Gary Knipe, on August 23, 1969.  The couple raised two children, Kirsten and Kyle, both of whom are teachers like their parents.              Patty’s first teaching position was Mapleton HS, and later, Siuslaw HS; she developed thriving art programs at each. Many artists-to-be were nurtured in her classes where “a love and appreciation of all arts” was offered, but her caring demeanor also made her classroom “a home for kids who didn’t feel at home anywhere else” … “a gifted teacher and mentor”.              Upon retirement in 2001, Patty painted, led art workshops, and travelled — most notably her dream trip to the art museums of Paris, and the couple’s second home in Los Bariles, Baja California Sur.              Patty survived a double lung transplant in 2010 that granted her nine additional years to share her love and talent with family and friends, and especially, to be Oma to her grandchildren Jonah and Wren.              Patty’s passing leaves a void in so many lives, but her presence endures and she is very much alive in our memories: “She is the most generous, kind, patient, and talented person I know” … “She has taught me so much about love and patience, and strength and family” … “Her smile made everyone else smile”.              Patty will also be remembered with the establishment of the Patricia Lee Knipe Art Scholarship for Mapleton and Siuslaw HS seniors.  Donations to the scholarship fund may be given at the June 1, 2019 Celebration of Life at the Florence Events Center (2:00) or at Umpqua Bank

b.  On Wednesday night, my husband and dog and my neighbor and his dog were on the beach near the Buenavista arroyo. A pair of dogs came down the arroyo and the men tried to chase them off. Then, one of the dogs snuck up from behind and jumped my older female dog (who was lying down).He latched onto her neck and it took my neighbor and my husband together to pry him offby beating him with their fists and prying his mouth open from around my dogs neck, They are all traumatized and my dog has a big gash on her neck. Please watch out for these dogs as they are very aggressive and dangerous. The aggressor is a medium sized brown or tan, possibly pit bull mix, neutered with a collar. His partner was a smaller female, also brown/tan. Neither one had been seen on that beach before but definitely dangerous. If not for the men’s quick responses, my girl would be gone. a.  (1) The WalMart in Cabo is no longer providing plastic one time use bags. They do sell reusable bags.  You can bring your own as we did.

(2) The Water Park is open.  We drove by this afternoon, everything was ready for business.  We asked a worker if it was open, she said yes tomorrow (meaning Friday).  Based on past experience, the park is open Fri, Sat, Sun until schools close for the summer.  Last year, they opened at 10am.  This is the phone from last year:  624 177 59 67

a.  Protection:  There is a chemical weapon that far exceeds Mace, Bear Spray, etc.  It is called Asp.  The Asp Key Defender is highly recommended as an alternative to the latter.  Google it.

b.  East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education is looking for coffee cans or any other like sized metal containers. We’re also looking for any left over metal ‘lamina’, the light weight corrugated metals that’s often used on roofs. We provide them both to the families camping on the beach. The coffee cans are used to contain cigarette butts and the lamina is cut into one meter square pieces and the families use them under their camp fires. These strategies help maintain our beautiful pristine beaches during our very busy Semana Santa Week. Please drop to recycling headquarters at the office at our newly named ‘Baja’s Resort at East Cape’ (previously East Cape Casas & RV Resort) through the green entrance and the ‘Be Awesome!’ signs.

Once again we are creating a super fun incentive program for the children and their families that are camping on the beaches during Semana Santa. We provide white bags for recycling and black bags for trash to all those camping along our East Cape beach frontage. Each day children bring their full recycling bags to the event center and receive a complimentary gift to thank and reward them for their participation in our recycling program. This has been an ongoing effort for the past five years, in addition to the coffee can containers and the camp fire lamina. They are welcomed by our visitors celebrating this important family holiday and appreciated as we continue to raise awareness about our precious natural resources. East Cape Recycling & Environmental Education is proud to lead up this program and appreciate all your support to help us raise money and environmental awareness. If you would like to donate a box of bags, white or black, or coffee cans or lamina, please drop to the ‘Baja’s Resort at East Cape’ office.

a.  Has anyone any experience with the 3D Dentist in LaPaz?  It’s called CEREC and uses the digital imaging technology called CEREC OMNICAM 3D to make crowns while you wait. I have friends who have had crowns done in Europe and the US with this technology and are very happy.
