…… In the end, we all become stories and Knox Hambley was an anthology of epic proportions. To know him was truly a great and rollicking adventure, an enduring love story, a hero’s journey and above all else – when you were the one experiencing a chapter of the magic jubilation his exuberant, carefree, joyous spirit created – a story you never wanted to end.
On March 12, 1950, Knox was born in the sign of water (and it is true, it is there that he felt his best) and as all who knew him can attest to, Knox spent just short of 69 years forging friendships and ensuring that the sound of his laughter, the generosity of his spirit and the best of himself was deeply imbedded in those he called his familiar, family or friend. Throughout his many lifetime achievements as a son, brother, friend, father, husband and within his longstanding service to the telephone company (both professionally and playfully), his determination to see Tween Lakes Resort stay within the family of friends he had created there, and his unforgettable presence in the kiteboarding community of Los Barriles, the greatest gift he both gave and received, the richness that his life was built upon and the legacy he leaves behind for all of us is this: the enduring importance of fun, love and friendship.
No matter what the weather or where he was, this free range human we call Knox, would don his superhero costume of a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops and embark upon his life’s work of imparting and infusing as much fun, humour, joy, happiness and love upon all those who crossed his path. HIs absence in our lives will be deeply felt but he will live on in our remembrances of him and because of him, in our own laughter and joy.
Keeping to his dead leaf theory, Knox’s earthsuit was cremated in his standard garb of a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops accompanied by a picture of his sweetheart, a burger and onion rings, an assortment of licorice, some heartfelt reading material and a butter tart.
A celebration of the stories he weaved among those he loved and an honouring of his friendship will take place in Los Barriles, Baja California later this month where his ashes will be returned to the wind and to the sea.
To all those who have been filled with the deep reverberating sound of his laughter resonating within them, Knox’s wish is that as he goes onto his next great adventure, in lieu of flowers or sadness, you make a donation in remembrance of him to your own self to slow down, relax, have fun, share a story or two of how he touched your life and enjoy the true beauty of your own life, live it well, share it with others, and with great love, invest in each other so that you have the richness and reciprocity of friendship such as he did.
