9. Highway 5 via FB Talk Baja 7-3-19:  Hwy 5. SAn Felipe to Chapala update.  San felipe to the road construction north of Puertecitos The road is crumbling and falling apart. Road crews are trying to repair but can not keep up 3 trucks of asphalt headed that way with work crews waiting. Road construction North of Puertecitos continues but the detour has not been graded for some time and is rough. Roads crews are starting to repair the damaged bridges North of Gonzaga (see photo). This was actually the fastest part of the trip.  Work continues on the new road from Gonzaga to Chapala. New paving is being put down so where we used to be able to drive on the new road bed is no longer allowed. Also the Coco Corner bypass (the new road route) is blocked off….Result is we are back on the old road which is worse than I have seen it in years.

c.  Repeat….it’s important:  The Banks here are adding new restrictions for Foreign, U.S. or Canadian, checks for deposit. As has been the case forever they do not allow erasure, write-overs, cross outs whatsoever. In other words you must add to whom, which must now be printed, along with the amount, also printed, period. No longhand! If your address or phone number printed on your check is no longer valid, leave it alone! No cross outs or additions and the usage of initialing your changes does not work here. No changes! Save yourself time and misery and write another check! Also make sure that if you must use the memo line at the bottom of the check none of the lines interfere with the Banks numbers at the very bottom. No corrections and only printing acceptable. Longhand is not even taught in the Schools here. Good luck and as with all changes it just takes a while to adapt. d.  Reply to military stops:   regarding theft at the military stops…it is a law that you, the tourist, have the right to ask, politely, that only one person at a time can search your car and belongings. I’ve been doing this for years with no problem. If they ask you to step away from the vehicle, I lock all doors and explain I will unlock when I can watch the searchers. If the tourist cannot speak Spanish, they should find a way to write it down, print it and hand it to the guards.

I was scammed, Airport Sorianna last Fri., two darling young boys dashed over to help load my groceries. (yes, I tipped them $50ps). When I got home my red zipper pouch was missing.  I use it exclusively for my Passport but I had just flown in and hadn’t put the passport into the pouch!!   Also, heard at the Loreto Fed. check one of our own had cash removed from her purse.  How many times do we have to tell ourselves do not get distracted no matter where you are!  Cheryl

f.  Thank you, Gringo Gazette!  Los Cabos director of mobility and traffic announced that vehicles parked on sidewalks will be towed away and fined $30 bucks. Add that to the cost of thw tow truck, which is another $40 bucks for small and medium sized vehicles.  The city government has increased most traffic fines up 100% and is launching random operatives by setting up check points in different parts of Cabo and San Jose. Just yesterday, half a dozen traffic officers had over 20 vehicles lined up and were checking their documents.  Lack of license plates, expired drivers’ licenses and lack of the electromechanical revision tags were most of the infractions issued. Keep your vehicles updates, we say, or pay the fine.

j.  Hola PBE,   I just had  hip replacement  surgery at the Salvatierra Hospital in La Paz and I have nothing but good things to say about the experience.  Knowing some Spanish is very helpful.  The room was first class and very comfortable.  All the hospital personnel were helpful and knew their jobs.  My surgeon was the best. These Clinics are FREE to the Mexican locals, however, ALL pets are welcome for a small donation.  NO FOOD OR WATER 8 hours before surgery.
