e.  4/20/20:  TRAVEL REPORT:  Made it fine to San Ignacio.  San Ignacio Springs yerts are way luxurious and spread out. They are NOT officially open (no advertising) but do have permission for travelers only. Made it from Leonero in 9 1/2 hours. Roads pretty empty. Gas stations open everywhere. No more health checkers after Constitution! Mulaja wide open and no one in masks except us. Easy trip so far.

Day 2:  Travel was easy. 5 hours from the WONDERFUL yerts at San Ignacio Springs to San Felipe.  Road construction with one lane open in a couple spots km 142 and 260 (that one is north of the turn off for LA Bay) The sign marking hwy. 5 is down so be alert. Tons of new pavement, the wild flowers are in full bloom, a few rocks to watch for o  the road, gas everywhere and take out food readily available.  Only delay was the crowded border crossing at San Luis Rio Colorado because Algodones was closed. All web info said Algodones was open till 10 PM but there was zero line and we were feeling soooo lucky till we got to the gate and it was locked. We got to the crossing at SL Rio Colorado at about 4:30 on a Sunday evening so it took about 3 hours. No secondary thank goodness! We got the last room at a Motel 6 in Yuma. Only take out at restaurants…safe travels everyone

Jai my older, slower dog has been missing from our morning walk since around 8.30, she often drops behind me and jack, the small black one, and sits to wait for me – I walked further this morning up around gustavo’s new park and got side tracked talking with Bill and Devi – jai never got that far and was nowhere to be seen when I walked back – I’ve driven around and around the back roads up there and the beach trails – talked to people – hoping she comes home, she needs water and food – I would appreciate a post and photo – Tessa    tessabarriles@gmail.com

FOOD BANK UPDATE- April 17, 2020
Overwhelming isn’t the word… our lovely community has rallied round to help the people of our region and between us we have managed to raise over $90,000 US in literally 3.5 weeks!
This is truly good people helping good people. (Some of this amount is actual and some is pledged).
We estimate that we can now feed everyone until August. But… based on latest information, we believe we will be needed through to Fall.  As we try to establish the distribution system, there have been some bumps along the way.  However, for an initiative that has only been in place since the middle of March, everyone has risen to the challenge.  Here is our latest update so that you can see what is going on:
*Households: This has been our first week and we have delivered over 500 food rations based on the list from the delegacions/communities.  Our target is now 750 – and based on the flood of inquiries, we won’t have a problem fulfilling this. We had originally estimated 600/650. We have been talking to EVERY household so that we know their actual needs, family sizes and so on.  The forthcoming weeks won’t be as slow, but this ‘census’ has been vital to getting the requirements right.  We were encouraged for example by families in El Cardonal who said that they have enough food for the next two weeks, but after that, they would need us.  It’s good to know that people are being considerate of the wider community. Then, in other areas, we have been shocked that people have had nothing and have resorted to extremes such as borrowing money so that they have been able to buy food for the past two weeks.
* Revised Target:  Like the rest of the world, this is a fluid situation. A lot has changed since the Delegacion first estimated 650 households; some we thought would need support don’t, but other good people not on the radar have since reached out and requested help.  Our earlier goal/time line was set at July but with more information about government action re the coronavirus protocol, realistically it’s going to be end of October.  We are getting 100 ‘parcels’ for the whole delegacion from the government of La Paz County (this includes Los Barriles, San Bartolo, El Coro etc).  While useful, unfortunately, they’re not enough to create balanced meals so we are using these donations to add to the LB Food Bank supplies.  There may be support coming from Cabo County (Buena Vista south to Cabo). But so far unconfirmed. So, we are now revising our target upwards to $150,000 US to feed 750 households until end October which is when we hope people should start to come back to town.  However, if we do get more support from the Government/authorities, obviously we will revise this target and we will let you all know as soon as we hear. Wouldn’t it be great if we weren’t needed at all?!
*Donating: We hope to get our dedicated LB Food Bank peso account confirmed at Intercam in the next day or so and we will share that as soon as possible – delays due to Semana Santa etc.  However, if you wish to donate, please do so through the following:
• US tax deductible: www.leaders2give.org  go to Los Barriles Food Bank.
• Check: Please emailgibson.ian@outlook.com for account number.
• Wire:  Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com for  instructions.
• Venmo & Paypal:  Jeane Harkleroad at
• Transferwise – https://transferwise.com/  Email Jeane at jhark29@gmail.com for peso account.
• Cash – cash is also accepted at Joe’s Deli.
• Any other questions, please email
*Donating Foodstuffs: Please do continue to donate dry foods, canned foods, long-life milk etc.  We need to keep the rations going for as long as possible, and this is a great way of doing it.  We are keeping back much of this food as it lasts longer.  It will be invaluable as we get into the summer.
*Donor List: We will be publishing the weekly list of contributors on Monday on Facebook, so if your name hasn’t appeared yet, we hope it’s there on Monday.  If you don’t see your name, please let us know although we do have donations coming in from numerous routes and it takes our small team some time to reconcile!
*Costs/Suppliers: We are still working to a figure of $200 pesos per household per week.  However, Joe and Luis are working tirelessly to get us better deals.  They have already negotiated 20% off bulk prices such as milk.  However, unfortunately we are seeing some costs increase.  For example, the cost of beans from our supplier has nearly doubled.
*The Response: We have been met by many people who just want to say thank you for the food parcels.  It’s hard to feature them all, but if you go to our Facebook page, many of the Rotary Interact young people have been videoing the families and their beautiful thank you messages. This is all with permission and something they have wanted to do. The team of Interact young people from Los Barriles has been wonderful – showing up early and working hard all day long.
*Volunteers: This is a true coming together of our community.  We have many great volunteers making a difference from a variety of different cultures, backgrounds and ages all helping one another – Mexican, American, Canadian, European.  Apologies if you have tried to volunteer but haven’t heard from us.  Please don’t feel disheartened!  We have been overwhelmed with emails! However, we believe that we will continue to need people as this is an on-going activity.  So, we are creating a list and we will continue to reach out to people as we work through this list, and as rotas change over the weeks.  Additionally, Joe is reducing the numbers of drivers and volunteers required as we go into the second week as we will be focusing more on delivery and less time on additional census activity. This will also help social distancing.
*Social Distancing: We believe we are getting better at encouraging our volunteers to observe social distancing and hygiene practices.  Every volunteer will now be issued with a briefing sheet on how to behave; masks are mandatory and the appropriate use of gloves is encouraged. Each car has sanitizer provided for use for those volunteers who exit the cars.
*Partners: The Spa Food Bank is providing an excellent service by feeding the people of El Coro and others.  Thank you guys!  Also thank you to Adam, Tracey, Deb and Leaders2Give for helping to get donations to the right place.   We are also trying to help groups beyond our region set up initiatives to help their own people as it is starting to get critical beyond our boundaries too.
*Community Spirit:  From trailers, additional lock-up space, valuable input on needy households, loans of trucks, donations of gas, people sending out emails to their networks…. the list goes on… it would be too long to list everyone who has contributed essential non-financial support to make the Food Bank work. A huge hug and thank you to these people!
*And Finally…. As with all new initiatives, there’s going to be criticism.  But please know that we are trying to address any wrinkles that crop up.  We welcome constructive comments because that’s how this initiative will get sharper.  But at a time when we may not all be feeling ourselves because of the current climate, let’s not throw rocks at one another. Please don’t curb the team’s and the community’s enthusiasm (and culture) because of your own personal optics.  If you have a question or concern, please address it directly to us so that we can develop a solution.  Let’s work together to get through these unprecedented times – and come out the other side as an even stronger, more tight-knit community.
Thank you

DISCUSSIONS – ANSWERS – ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.  The video conferencing app Zoom which has come under scrutiny lately for
lapses in security has hired some of the nations best web security
experts.  They are now totally focused on locking down their software.
Part of the problem was caused by hacks of other websites that contained
user emails and passwords.  Some people use the same password on
multiple sites, never a good idea.  Hackers used that data to gain
access into Zoom user accounts.  A heads up to us all, don’t reuse the
same password multiple times on multiple sites.  The password manager
Last Pass (https://www.lastpass.com/) is a great secure alternative to
create unbreakable passwords. The will create and maintain those
password for you.  Last Pass will remember and auto fill your passwords.

Please remember to back up all your data and photos.  Google Photo will
back up all your photos on all devices for free under 12 MP.  Amazon

a variety of external drives.  Remember, one copy does not mean it’s a
backup.   thecomputerguy@usa.com

Food Bank 041220

** LOS BARRILES FOOD BANK – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED **

I’m sure you will all agree that THE most important issue at the moment is to feed our town, and we’re pleased to say that the only reason The Los Barriles Food Bank is working is because of you.

These are unprecedented times and we have had to rapidly create the food bank against the backdrop of social distancing and rapidly rising numbers of people with the coronavirus. While we work hard to make this a reality, we wanted to share with you where we are and our plan moving forward while answering some of your questions….

Target: The Los Barriles Delegado has identified a list of more than 600 households who have been impacted by the collapse of tourism across our region that includes Los Barriles, El Cardonal, Boca de Alamo, San Bartolo, Piedras Gordas, Campamento (in partnership with the Spa Food Bank in the early days), El Coro, Buena Vista. Luis (Delegado) is liaising with other Delegados and community members to make this happen. We have some information that the government might be able to provide assistance on this scale at some point. However, in the absence of this now, The Los Barriles Food Bank is extremely important. We will of course keep you updated with any developments here.

Foodstuffs: We are currently creating parcels that include flour, beans, rice, oil, sugar, milk and are using paper bags to minimize environmental impact. We will be topping up the basics with fresh fish and fruit and vegetables depending on availability. Thank you to the Veggie Ladies for their contribution here and to the fisherman who are authorized to go fishing for the community. Chris from Smokey’s has opened up his smoke house to us, and his staff will be preparing the fish and storing it ready for distribution. Thanks Chris!

Donated Foodstuffs: Thank you so much for all the donations of food. They will be added to each parcel until they are gone. We are starting another scheme called ‘Drive Up & Collect’. A number of volunteers will be driving around subdivisions collecting any cans, dried foods, long-life milk etc that you have and would like to share with us. Simply leave them outside your gate on a specified day and time and we will pick them up. We HAVE to make the food stretch for so many and just a couple of cans to you when added together could keep this initiative going for another week.

Distribution: Joe from Joe’s Deli/Joe’s Pizza has cleared out his whole office and has created a dedicated space for storing and packing items. Every day of the week, led by the Delegado and coordinated by Joe, Jeane and the volunteers, teams will be delivering food parcels direct to households. This will ensure no crowds and social distancing requirements are met. We start on Monday April 13th.

Prices: We are fortunate to have both Luis and Joe spearheading the negotiations with suppliers. We benefit from Joe’s experience with wholesalers while Luis has excellent connections in the agricultural regions and with the fishing community.

The Cost: We have calculated that it costs approx. 200 pesos per household to feed them for a week with our parcels. We also have other costs such as gas to deliver parcels. This might fluctuate according to what we are able to secure, but we want to keep it to this level so that we can feed 600+.

Suppliers: It’s important that we source as much from local growers and producers. We are beginning to see that suppliers are now getting anxious because of the staggering fall in demand for their products. This might help us secure foodstuffs at a better price as we progress.

Volunteers: We have a merry band of volunteers but we desperately need more to help pack up the parcels and also to drive around helping to distribute food. We will help to protect you as much as we can through facemasks and gloves and keep social contact to an absolute minimum – perhaps one person with you as the deliverer of the foods. Please email Jeane at jhark29@gmail.com

You The Donors: We will publish a list of donors tomorrow – possibly too much information today! THANKS EVERYONE!

Accountability: We are securing receipts and keeping a very tight eye on the money. Ian Gibson is heading up the accounting supported by Jeane Harkleroad. We will be publishing a reconciliation for all to see in the coming days.

Our Strategy: We don’t know if we will get government help. We hope so, but it’s not yet confirmed. Therefore, as this is a fluid situation with things changing daily, we are currently working on a short term plan to feed 600+ households until the start of July. However, we will be assessing the situation at the end of April/May when we have more information to work with. As you can see, it’s expensive to feed this many people. Our target until the start of July is $68,000 US. We have raised an amazing $55,000 US already thanks to you! So we’re looking for another $13,000 US.

Partnerships: Through Adam Greenberg and Leaders2Give we are working with a team of young ‘future leaders’ from our local Rotary Interact Club who will be assisting with planning, financial reporting, packaging and distribution. The participation of Leaders2Give not only helps us to create and guide new leaders in our community but because they are involved with planning, delivery and reporting US citizens www.leaders2give.org. Thank you also to the Spa Food Bank who have been so generous in helping us reach people in the first weeks as we try to sort out the system.

Donations: We really need your help to raise the additional $13,000. People are being incredibly creative and supportive; from selling cars, their paintings, donating money from yoga classes, from making masks and just emailing friends and clients who love LB and might not realize what’s happening here. We are all feeling the pinch, but even just $20 can feed two families for two weeks. Please please see how you can help us!! Constructive ideas welcome such as an online auction? online raffle from afar?!

How to Donate:

· US tax deductible contributions – please follow the instructions on the section that will either say ‘Temporary, Emergency COVID-19 Initiative’ or ‘The Los Barriles Food Bank’ via www.leaders2give.org.

· Check – drop a check to a Wells Fargo branch. Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com for account number.

· Wire: Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com for instructions.

· Venmo and Paypal to Rotary Past President Jeane Harkleroad at jhark29@gmail.com. Please email Jean’e to let her know that you are doing this.

· Transferwise – https://transferwise.com/ – this is a fast account-to-account transfer system. Please email Jeane at jhark29@gmail.com for an account number, etc.

· Cash – cash is also be accepted. Please make your donation at Joe’s Deli.

· Any other question regarding donations: Please email gibson.ian@outlook.com

And finally: This is a huge project and we are learning by the hour. No-one has had to do this before in our little town – this is way beyond the after effects of a hurricane or earthquake. This is a sustained period of no income for at least six months for good working people in our region. Please bear with us while we do the best we can to make this a success for our community; there will be teething problems but we have over 30 volunteers who are passionate about making this happen.

Best wishes

Joe, Luis, Jeane, Emma, Ian

As well, the roads leading to Cabo are also blocked and police are preventing passage to SJ and Cabo without a permission slip. IF anyone needs to travel, for any reason, we can provide a note.
We have not seen anyone even suspicious with covid19, but we are prepared. In the event we do see someone who needs hospitalization we now have proper transport chambers and PPE, thanks to a 24 hour drive spearheaded by Brittany Baker, Megan O’Leary and Laurel Eastman and their long chain of emails.  c.  Here’s another reminder from “Feeding the Hungry”.  If you are able, please help supply grocery funds for the people in our community who are, or shortly will be, going hungry.  100% of your donation goes to buy food vouchers at our local grocery, Chapitos.
This voucher program has been in existence for 4 years, and the vouchers are being distributed by a trustworthy local Mexican who intimately knows the people in need in our community. He has been distributing basic food supplies to them for over 10 years.  The vouchers are used by the participants to purchase much needed food items or prescriptions or diapers; whatever the family needs the most.
We will accept pesos, dollars, US checks or Mexican checks.  Please contact us at purkeybh@gmail.com, or call Ben and Harriet at 624-141-0339 (land line) or 624-177-9881 (Ben’s cell) or Harriet’s US cell, 541-854-5303.

The cancellation of our March Feeding the Hungry Fashion Show Fundraiser was a real disappointment to us, but it is the Mexicans, the poorest of the poor that our program helps. They are being hurt the most.  Any financial help will be greatly appreciated. – purkeybh@gmail.com
