To all who contributed to RECYCLING in 2024-25, GRACIAS for a terrific season: tons of trash has been kept out of the landfill, a major contributor to keeping our part of the East Cape clean! Recycling Day is the first Thursday of the month, November through July (maybe August). Committed volunteers help process the community’s recyclable items (cracked pickleballs included) and prepare them for sale locally (earth-friendly cement block with styrofoam is made in Southern Baja for example) or, with your generous donations, for transport to the recycling center in La Paz. From La Paz, baled material is shipped to mainland Mexico for transformation into various consumer products.
East Cape Recycling (https://www.eastcaperecycling.com/) also fundraises with programs like Movie Nights and the Blue Barrel Beach project to help our community. These additional funds help pay for the “Cursos de Verano,” a three week summer day-camp program free to more than 100 local children, ages 6-12. Using fun activities and games, volunteers promote environmental education, helping children (and the adults in their lives) understand the importance of protecting the environment, protecting marine life and what the consequences are when our environment becomes polluted.

RECYCLING will be Thursday, JUNE 5th, 9-11 a.m. at Baja’s Resort at East Cape. There is minimal volunteer staff this time of year so your preparation of recyclables is much appreciated! Everything should be clean and flattened as small as possible: plastic separated into clear, opaque-milky and colored (with tops removed), aluminum and tin cans should be separated from one another. REMINDER: no paper/paperboard (only corrugated cardboard), no glass. Your 100p donation/household/month makes transporting these recyclables to La Paz possible.

This year’s 21st annual El Cardonal Torneo de Pesca was another great success with 47 boats and numerous shore anglers. The El Cardonal Prepa School (TBC20) received 476,200 pesos from the torneo & raffle & donations which will be used to build a roof for shade outside their classrooms for the students recreational activities as well as helping to get electricity for the school since they now have no power. Dear Friends,

It was over 18 years ago with the arrival of Hurricane John that the Baja Western Onion got its start. Debra and I moved to Todos Santos the previous year, and John was our first hurricane. As John passed by La Paz the next morning, we started emailing to let folks know we were safe. In the weeks that followed, we started relaying damage reports and forwarding messages for others. We soon realized that many folks who don’t speak Spanish were eager for a regular source of local Baja information and updates, and not just during storms. This idea became the start of the Baja Western Onion you’re reading now. Emailing every week from the start, we estimate we’ve now published and emailed over 6 million copies of the Baja Western Onion. And 100% of our success and longevity is because of you, our many Subscribers, Supporters and friends.

And now is the time that Debra and I can let new hearts and minds take the Baja Western Onion to the next level. We’ve decided to pass the baton to Brendan Alexander, your new Editor and Publisher. You may know Brendan through his selfless efforts to help promote and sustain the Gastrovino Food and Wine Festival. Brendan brings tremendous experience and expertise that we’ve been looking for, and we’re delighted he’s able to take the Baja Western Onion in new directions we could only imagine. Brendan will be introducing himself in the next issue, and will be looking forward to receiving your ideas and input on the way forward.

There has been a break-in on Elephant Tree. The thief(s) entered the home while the owner was out for a one hour walk, around 5 pm. It is suspected they were watching the house. Many things were stolen including all of the woman’s jewelry, much of which had sentimental as well as monetary value. The police asked if there were cameras, which unfortunately there were none. Be watchful, take heed, be careful. Unfortunately there is a thief in the area.
