a. Driving to Baja? I use Google Maps on my phone for the entire route. Go to Google Maps, look in the top left corner for the three bars, click there. Drop down to “off line maps”. With a little patience you can down load all the sections of the trip south. That will give you GPS coverage via your phone for the entire trip even without cell coverage. Even in normal usage, downloading “off line maps” will use a lot less data and save initialization time.

There is an app that I use frequently called: Life 360. It allows you to track and be tracked by family and friends in your group. When I can’t remember where I left my cell phone, I use my wife’s phone to find it (or was it vice versa) using Life 360. If you have one of those expensive UTV’s, you might leave an old phone installed in the UTV with a cheap data plan. That can track the UTV if stolen. If it were me, I would use a Wyze Cam aimed at the UTV when it’s at home. The Wyze Cams can be set to record on motion and give alerts.   thecomputerguy@usa.com

b.  Beware Scammers working the Las Brisas area.  White car.  Redhead guy with a little boy.  Sometimes he has a “pregnant wife” and next with a young adult male.  MO car hood open, appealing to Good Samaritans.  Story changes every time.  I was a succor for money the first time.  Water the next.  While appearing in distress on the roadside, he waved off two local cars that also tried to stop to help…appears to be preying on gringos.  Beware.    (unsigned)

e.  Long-time resident of LaRibera, CYNTHIA JO BROWN-WILSON died of natural causes on 22nd of August, 2019.  Cynthia’s sister, Kristiana Brown & partner, David Offerman, and good friends: Bob & Ruth Moran of LaRibera, laid her to rest in the Sea of Cortez with Cynthia’s late husband, Scott Wilson, Jr. on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2019.  May they both Rest in Peace.

a.  (1)  Here are some things to add to you shopping list for Mexico.  I use a variety of security cameras and have found the Wyze Cams to be reliable, cheap and easy to use.  I have both of their still cams and pan cams.  There are also a lot of accessories available now that provide a small amount of weather proofing.  They use an internal 32GB max micro SD card to record.  The recording can be setup to record on motion only or continuous.  I can access the video from any portable device.  The cams can be setup for alert notifications as well.  The pan cams can track motion.  When you step on our property, you see cameras tracking your every movement.  A portable device such as a phone or tablet is required for setup.  Currently there is no PC or Mac access to the videos.  A power outlet and WiFi are required.  If you have an ATV or UTV, it would be a nice idea to mount one to keep an eye on your vehicles.  The Cams do have IR for night vision and recording.  Wyze just started selling an addon module that will monitor for motion and two doors.  Here is their web site for pricing and product: https://www.wyze.com/. There is a downside to all security cams.  I have a number of cams from different providers (I can’t say how many since my wife reads the BPE.)  The reason I have more than one is rate of failure. In the US, all my cams work perfectly.  In Baja I get about a 5% failure rate.  Additionally, there is no direct connection to any security force.  There are a couple of commercial providers in the Los Barriles area that do provide monitoring.

(2)  Windows users make sure that you download the latest feature update.  The latest version is Windows 10, version 1903 (2).  Prior versions of Windows 10 will no longer be supported in 18 months.  To find your version, go to the bottom left corner and type “Update History”.  Windows 7 end of life is 14 January 2020.

e.  THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PITCHED IN – NEW COMMUNICATIONS CENTER FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL   In a country where revolutions are celebrated with lots of dancing and fireworks, a quieter revolution slipped by last week with very little notice. The grand opening of our newly refurbished Library and new Tech Center happened Friday, August 30th, attended by happy teachers and students, including the entire Third Grade. But not much dancing, and no fireworks, just new doors opening quietly to the whole world for all of our students. Our Rotary was initially asked to help refurbish the library, and then to move the tech center, and the two projects naturally merged. The result was a space for both research and communications unlike any available before. And like any successful revolution, it couldn’t be done by just one. Making the center a reality required every single one of all who volunteered their time and talents. Without Jean’e Harkleroad’s endless energy and perseverance the project would have stalled. Without Roy Ice and FiberTech, Andrew Tuck and EarthBlock, Luis and PK Builders, many school staff, a generous donation from the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club, and of course, our always helping friend Memo (Guillermo Cosio Cota). Thank you, one and all. The world just became more accessible to our children.

FISHING REPORT

a.  Trophy sized dorado return to Los Cabos as larger tuna play hide and seek.
As East Cape settles into late summer mode. Offering roosterfish from the beach, smallish dorado with a few wahoo to add to inshore excitement.   At Muertos bay it is more of the same with dorado and yellowfin tuna taking center stage.
