1. Cell phones in Mexico Chapter 2. For those of you who missed Chapter 1, all US cell phones have contracts with the three providers in Baja: TelCel, Telefonica and ATT Mexico. The US cell providers contract tower time with those three Mexican companies. Now back to Chapter 2. Your reception in Los Barriles or anywhere in the world is dependent on your proximity and line of sight to the Cell Towers. In LB, those towers are located in the huge palm tree downtown, the tower at La Curva and one on the road from LB to San Bartolo. Some companies sell range extenders that require an externally mounted antenna and a signal amplifier. It’s been my experience they do little to improve reception. Another factor that affects reception is the quality of the phone and the number of radio frequencies installed. Most midlevel to premium phones will work well in LB. There are a couple of cell phone apps that may help as well. I have used Skype for years on my cell phone with great success. Skype even works well with DSL internet. Another option is the Talkatone App. With Talkatone you use WiFi for calls and texts. That would include internet access from the internet and mobile data. Cost is about $5 per month. You do get a phone number that will allow calls in and out with texting. Talkatone can be used with an Ipad as well as a phone. Remember if the person on the other end can’t hear you, it’s a problem with your upstream bandwidth, common with a DSL connection (TelMex). thecomputerguy@usa.com

Sad News: Sylvia Ossa, everyone’s favorite reflexology practitioner, went to join the angels, September 23, 2021 at her home in Sedona, AZ after suffering a stroke.
She was entertaining and described herself on FB as:
•       “I’ve always been crazy, its kept me from going insane!” …. The Eagles
•       “Our first teacher is our own heart”….. Cheyenne Words
•       “Love is all there is” ….The Beatles
She was a gifted reflexology practitioner and worked in the Baja since about 2006.  Her life was full of adventure, and she lived many different lives in her time on the earth.   She loved coming to Los Barriles and loved her furry children…. her two dogs.  She will be missed by her friends and clients – most of whom became her friends. She is now so soaring with the angels and loving the freedom!!!

Beginning soon this year and extending over the next year, the Cellular 3G network will begin to disappear in the US. Some older phones and services in cars that use the 3G network will no longer work. If your cell phone has a handcrank, it will no longer work.

This time of year there are many questions about cell service in Mexico and “will my cell phone work in Baja.” There are two major providers in Baja, TelCel and Telefonica, followed by ATT Mexico. All of these carriers have sharing contracts with the carriers in the US. Will your Verizon phone work in Baja, yes provided you have made arrangements before you leave the US.

As we get older, our hearing begins to lack the clarity that we once had. Even those folks who have good hearing may also benefit from a good soundbar. Over the past couple of years, the TV manufacturers have reduced the size of the bezel (plastic frame) around the TV. In order to do that, they have placed the speaker behind the TV. And, they don’t give us the best speakers possible. The content providers have begun to switch from the stereo format to forms of suround sound. They record the left and right channels as normal but they move the voices to the center channel. If you have the old stereo setup the voices will not be as clear. I highly recommend tht you purchase a 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1 system. The important number is the odd whole number. The .1 is the subwoofer. The 3.1 gives stereo with the center voice channel. The 5.1 adds the rear ambient sound and the 7.1 bounces sound off the ceiling so you can feel the helicopter hovering overhead. I have several sets of Vizio sound bars that are just great and economically priced.
