a. Los Barriles Food Bank Update: 1 August 2020 – Apologies for the recent silence but it has been a busy few weeks as we have adapted how we operate in line with COVID-19 guidance.  We want to reassure everyone that we have been carefully managing the funds that we raised from our amazing donors. As a result, the good news is that we believe we can continue now into mid October but we will reassess at the end of August. The core team (Joe, Jeane, Emma, Ian) are the only ones who set the budget, have access to the money and manage the suppliers. We have seen a reduction in the number of families that we have been helping out. While some businesses have re-opened, we are now getting to the stage in town where other businesses will have to close because of the peak summer weeks when it is quiet. As people haven’t had enough time to save up money for this period, we are expecting that the numbers of people requiring help from the Los Barriles Food Bank will rise again.

We have planned for this and thanks to our great volunteers, we are able to continue to provide food. We are now setting up collection stations in areas which has gone very well. The majority in the community are observing and respecting the rules – masks, social distancing and minimal contact as well as washing hands. Our rule – no mask no food.

Well not so quiet, after two failed attempts resulting in two broken crates, Enrique picked up Callado and got into the back of S.N.A.P.’s  taxi transport car to head to Dr. Cristobal’s office to remove two of his ‘treasures’ that he did not want to give up.  Silvia Masis and I have continued with S.N.A.P.’s spay and neuter program since the shutdown of clinics in March.   Callado is number 215 with more scheduled appointments this week and next week.  If you know of a family with pets needing sterilization but no way of transport, please let Silvia or Kathy know.  Thanks, Kathy Ice – kathyp1210@yahoo.com

b.  Cortez Rescue is excited to announce that we are looking for the following positions to start in Oct/Nov 2020: 2 board directors to sit on our 501 (c)3 US board and 4 Cortez Rescue Center volunteers. We are saying goodbye to Stacy and Bee who have worked tirelessly over the past years and are now stepping down to pursue other interests local to them in the US. East Cape Health Center Update Covid19 cases on the rise in Mexico. None of us want to hear this because we are saturated with bad news everywhere you turn. It’s best to know how to protect yourself, your friends and family. Wear a mask, socially distance and wash your hands. We all want a hug, just not right now. This is only a blip in time but could mean your life if you are not careful and impatient.

The first Thursday of August, which is August 6, from 8 am to 10 am, East Cape Recycling will be open for DIY recyclers at the recycle center located at The Resort at East Cape (just north of Caleb’s Cafe)…Do It Yourself – bring your recyclables ready to deposit into our receptacles. Everything cleaned, then crushed – cans, plastic bottles, remove lids from containers and bottles, cardboard broken down and wrapped in twine, polystyrene, no glass. Please wear your gloves and wear a big smile under your mask. If you are unable to bring your recyclables previously prepared, you may personally use our large tarp area to prepare them, and then put them into the receptacles. This is our last summer recycling day. We will then close to prepare for summer rains and hurricane season. We are grateful for your $100 peso minimum donation for a month’s recyclables. a.  Quick update on our local PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) project:  Our team of Mexican seamstresses continue to earn money sewing masks, thanks to the generous donations from community members. We use the money raised to pay their salaries and to purchase high quality fabric and elastic.
The need to wear masks continues, and our goal is that everyone in our community who needs a mask has access to a nice comfortable one! b.  **Important News** The Los Barriles Food Bank From Monday 20 July we will be starting deliveries EVERY OTHER WEEK. So that means you will receive your rations on Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Thursday 23 July. After that, the next delivery will be Monday 3 August, Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 August. You will receive a bigger ration box. As the summer progresses, we have fewer and fewer vehicles and volunteers so we are making these essential changes to the delivery system. Soon you will be asked to pick up your rations from a location – please watch out for announcements.
