a.  Via the Gringo Gazette: Don’t be caught using your phone, because the police have announced a crackdown. Don’t scoff, you scofflaws, this could get as serious as the crackdown on parking in handicap spaces. That got really serious, with fines as high as $400 US. They are not announcing the fines for phone use, but they’re plotting something big.

b.  BIG Congratulations goes to TEAM LOS BARRILES!!!! Coach Meno and his kids are #1 winners of the first Kids Pickleball Tournament hosted by the Federacion Mexicana de Pickleball and Tres Palapas Pickleball.  Teams aged 8 to 16 gathered in pickleball competition and 36 of the best represented their home towns of San Jose, La Ribera and Los Barriles.  Special thanks to EVERYONE, sponsors, kids, parents, coaches, helpers, staff & spectators.  It took a village, and yes we are one very special village!!!  Photo by Lori Makabe

a.   We are actively taking reservations for Smokey’s 11th Annual Super Bowl Bash. Reservations are extremely limited as we are not erecting tents. We are once again raffling off a quad (Polaris sportsman 500). Tickets are $25 usd / $500 mn. As always, if you buy 4 tix, you get 6 tix (2 ticket bonus). Need not be present to win. Tickets on sale now at Smokey’s. We are also selling Super Bowl squares at $5 ($100 mn), $10 ($200 mn) and $50 ($1000 mn). Also, please know the following: All Super Bowl guests will be charged a $10 usd / $200 mn non-refundable reservation fee. All guests will be required to spend a minimum of $25 usd / $500 mn during the event (approximately 5 hours). If minimum expenditure is not met, a surcharge will be added to the bill in the amount of the shortage. A 20% gratuity charge will be added to all bills. They exchange your $500 Peso bill for a $50 and demand more money.  When paying in cash, get out of the car, fan out your payment and count it out to the attendant. (#2)  Police checkpoint was set up in Buenos Aires arroyo tonite (Friday). Gentleman in front of me on a side by side was asked to wear his seat belt.  Another behind me on a quad was asked to wear a helmet.  Appears to be an emphasis on vehicle safety.  Police were very polite.

a.  Courtesy the Ventana View – Our neighbors to the north:   Last year on the road in La Paz between Sorianas and the auto wrecker many gringos were pulled over by a guy on a powerful green sport bike impersonating a police officer. He is back but the bike is a darker color. I was pulled over last Saturday 1 block east of Sorianas on Colosio. He said I went thru a flashing yellow light and asked for my drivers license and said I would have to pay a 2000 peso fine at the police station on Monday. I offered 500 but he would only accept 1000 pesos as my drivers license had expired. It was a mistake to pay him. He wore a dark blue jumpsuit, helmet and mask over his nose and mouth which made him impossible to identify. Nowhere on his bike or uniform was the word police. The lawyer who helped me yesterday to get a Mexican drivers license told me to remember 2 things. Never give a policeman money and never give him your drivers license. Carry a clear photocopy of both sides of your license and give that to him. Beware of this guy. Anyone else who got stopped can send me an email to jrosene@shaw.ca and I will add up the number of other victims.

b.  I was asked if we had an emergency (911) number to call the local police here on the East Cape.  The incident was someone, probably  high on drugs or drunk,  but nevertheless, middle of the night yelling outside  this person’s house..  Frightening to say the least.

Historian Iris Engstrand presents newly released book highlighting life of early Baja California explorer and astronomer, Joaquín Velázquez de León

El Triunfo, Baja California Sur, Mexico:   On Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1:00pm join University of San Diego Emeritus Professor, Iris Engstrand who will read from her recently published, second edition book, Joaquín Velázquez de León: Royal Officer in Baja California, 1768-1770.   Professor Engstrand’s reading will be held in the tea room of the Museo Ruta de Plata located on Calle Municipal, El Triunfo, BCS.   Copies of the Professor Engstrand’s book will be on sale at the museum gift store and she will be available after her talk for a book signing.

Originally published in 1976, Engstrand’s second edition book published by Editorial Museo Ruta de Plata brings to life the unique colonial era, expeditionary efforts of Velázquez de León, an officer who served the Spanish Crown in Baja California’s Cape Region as well as his historic role in documenting the 1769 Transit of Venus from peninsula’s first colonial settlement at Real de Santa Ana.    Engstrand’s book also highlights Velázquez de León’s testy relationship with Manuel de Ocio, Baja California’s first entrepreneur.

According to Engstrand, “the new edition of Joaquín Velázquez de León: Royal Officer in Baja California–1768-1770  brings together an analysis of the 1769 Transit of Venus with a recreation of the Transit in 2012. New illustrations in an affordable publication give the reader an unparalleled opportunity to understand the accomplishments of Spain in science and mining in Baja California during the late eighteenth century.”

About Professor Iris Engstrand:
Iris Wilson Engstrand is a Professor of History Emerita at the University of San Diego who received her B.A, M.A and Ph.D. in history from the University of Southern California.   Engstrand has written a numerous books and articles focusing on some of the earliest explorations of Baja California.  Dr. Engstrand’s academic honors include USD’s distinguished University Professorship; the Davies Award for Faculty Achievement; and fellowships from the Fulbright Commission, American Philosophical Society and the Huntington Library.

About the Museo Ruta de Plata:
Located in the historic mining town of El Triunfo, Baja California Sur, México, the mission of the Museo Ruta de Plata is to bring the history of La Paz’s Ruta de Plata region to life through exhibits and expanded community development promoting mining heritage tourism.  The Museo Ruta de Plata is open daily except Tuesdays from 10am to 5pm.  Admission to the museum is 75 pesos for BCS residents, 100 pesos for non-residents and 60 pesos for seniors.
Editorial Museo Ruta de Plata is a literary project of the museum that aims to increase public awareness of Spanish and English literature highlighting the mining heritage of Baja California Sur from 1700 to 1930 with an emphasis on the historic mining districts of the Municipality of La Paz.

a.  Marcos & Ivaan, the Father-Son duo from La Paz will resume selling fish on Wednesday from here on out. They will sell their fish in front of the East Cape RV Resort at 9:30am every Wednesday morning.
There was a mix up over the holidays, but everything is back to the normal schedule now.

b.  We’re fortunate that his passion runs deep for our East Cape communities as new Mayor Luis Lucero took the helm in Los Barriles at the end of November. Luis was truly the heir apparent for this position, highly endorsed by his constituents from El Cardonal and especially by his predecessor, Delegada Francie Olachea. He comes with great previous experience, having served twice as the ‘Sub Delegado’ of his home community on the north end of the jurisdiction. He loves the environment, the beaches, the mountains, the desert and the people that populate them. He will be at Recycling’s first Movie Night on January 10 to meet his English-speaking community and share a bit about his initiatives. Also, Wednesday afternoons from noon on he is available at the Delegation building to meet with anyone who would like to see him. b.  ***WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!*** Can you spare two hours on Saturday January 12 to distribute vital information about spaying and neutering in Los Barriles?  Together, Cortez Rescue, SNAP and Amigos are promoting the importance of spaying and neutering as we face a BIG dog over-population problem. We will be distributing Spanish-language brochures across Los Barriles to promote the importance of neutering pets. This is in advance of the SNAP clinic on January 19.  We will split people into pairs and hand out brochures to households. Because the hotel occupancy of the barrels and buenavista is “Topada” for another event not related to the start of the championship desert series 2019 Championship, it has been determined to change the date of the competition for the weekend of 9 And February 10, delaying a week the start of the serial with the already traditional race “The Barrels East Cape 300”.
Probaja has always wanted the logistics of runners and equipment to be the most appropriate, and in front of the fact of hotel demand for the end originally planned (2 AND 3 February) this would have complicated a lot, it’s by This, thinking of the teams themselves and their logistics, that we are taking this decision.
