a.  Via the Gringo Gazette: Don’t be caught using your phone, because the police have announced a crackdown. Don’t scoff, you scofflaws, this could get as serious as the crackdown on parking in handicap spaces. That got really serious, with fines as high as $400 US. They are not announcing the fines for phone use, but they’re plotting something big.

b.  BIG Congratulations goes to TEAM LOS BARRILES!!!! Coach Meno and his kids are #1 winners of the first Kids Pickleball Tournament hosted by the Federacion Mexicana de Pickleball and Tres Palapas Pickleball.  Teams aged 8 to 16 gathered in pickleball competition and 36 of the best represented their home towns of San Jose, La Ribera and Los Barriles.  Special thanks to EVERYONE, sponsors, kids, parents, coaches, helpers, staff & spectators.  It took a village, and yes we are one very special village!!!  Photo by Lori Makabe

EVENTS

a.   We are actively taking reservations for Smokey’s 11th Annual Super Bowl Bash. Reservations are extremely limited as we are not erecting tents. We are once again raffling off a quad (Polaris sportsman 500). Tickets are $25 usd / $500 mn. As always, if you buy 4 tix, you get 6 tix (2 ticket bonus). Need not be present to win. Tickets on sale now at Smokey’s. We are also selling Super Bowl squares at $5 ($100 mn), $10 ($200 mn) and $50 ($1000 mn). Also, please know the following: All Super Bowl guests will be charged a $10 usd / $200 mn non-refundable reservation fee. All guests will be required to spend a minimum of $25 usd / $500 mn during the event (approximately 5 hours). If minimum expenditure is not met, a surcharge will be added to the bill in the amount of the shortage. A 20% gratuity charge will be added to all bills. Clients are of course free to tip in excess of the minimum gratuity charge.An extensive special Super Bowl menu will be announced about 1 week prior to the game. Please make your reservations now. We hope to see you at Smokey’s on Super Bowl Sunday (February 3rd)!

c.  FIESTA LA RIBERA. Jan 29, celebrating 20 yrs as a delegation. A futbol; soccer tournament in the morning. At the delegation, behind the futbol stadium there will be food from local restaurants, a local produce market. There will be entertainment, music and dancers. Traditional camote, sweet potato, sweet potato pies and sweet potato dulces, candy. There will also be a foot race from the playa to the delegation, Come and learn some history of this up and coming puebla
