b.  **** DOG FOOD BANK! ****  ALMA is delighted to launch our DOG FOOD BANK at Homes & Land of Baja!  If you are leaving town, or would like to donate food towards needy dogs, please drop it off at the Homes and Land office in the center of town. Full, half empty or containers are all welcome. a. Road Report courtesy of The Ventana View: Mar 10&11 – La Ventana to Guerro Negro is very good with shoulders and few potholes. 13 hours. From Guerro Negro to the turnoff for Mex 5 were potholes and no shoulders part of the way (less than 2 hrs). The unpaved portion of Mex 5 is much better now and took 1.5 hours instead of the 2.5 in Nov 2017. From the end of the unpaved portion to Mexicali is the same, lots of vados but 4 lane after San Felipe. We reached Mexicali just before 5pm Sunday. Not a good time to cross – we waited in line for 3.5 hours. Go to the bathroom before you get in line. Vendors sell food/trinkets. We recommend the helado carts. A phone app, Bordify, gives you real time updates on crossing wait times. We didn’t know about that until it was too late (Next year!).

d.  COULD IT BE YOU?  ALMA is now working successfully with rescue groups in Calgary, Vancouver and Portland to re-home our wonderful Baja doggies that have been abandoned, injured or neglected.  They are truly grateful for their forever homes, and it takes a team to make it happen!  We are now looking for a RESCUE GROUP VOLUNTEER who can help liaise with the rescue groups and coordinate with other volunteers to send dogs northward.  You don’t need to be based in Los Barriles as everything is done by email (occasionally phone). You will need to have a computer, good organisational skills and be proficient with emails, Word, Excel etc.  This is the perfect position for someone who wants to help but maybe travels a lot, or is based in the US or Canada.    We anticipate that it could take 3 – 4 hours per week.  If this sounds like you, please email us at info@almahumanitaria.org for more information.  Thank you!

a.   Baja Night Sky #123 — View the planets Mercury & Venus after sunset, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn before sunrise, and a bright Iridium flare Friday evening.March 8, 2018 – On any clear evening this week you can find Venus and Mercury low in the west after sunset.  Venus is the brighter of the two and sets first. Mercury is just two degrees above Venus at the 2 o’clock position. Here in El Sargento, both planets set behind the mountains to the west by about 7pm.  The best time to spot these elusive worlds is between 6:40 and 6:55 pm just above the mountain peaks.  On Friday evening there will be a bright Iridium flare just after Venus and Mercury set. Find the constellation Orion high in the South by 7pm. The three equally-spaced stars of the hunter’s belt point down to Sirius, the brightest start in the night sky.  Iridium 80 will flare close to Sirius between the star and the constellation. Flare time in 7:04:03 pm.  The bright star far below Sirius is Canopus, second brightest star in the night sky. Notice how it twinkles in many colors and even seems to jump back and forth. This natural refraction of starlight passing through lower layers of the atmosphere results in the star being reported more often than most as a UFO.
