2019 Taste of East Cape

Chila Lunzmann and the Zopilites team are the top winner of the Taste of East Cape 2019!  This makes it 3 years in a row for Zopilotes to be among the winners of the Taste of East Cape!  Zopilotes pulled nothing back as they brought enough ice cream for half of Los Barriles!  Well at least all of those who were at the Taste event!  With tastes of Pralines and Cream, Mocha Frappe with Kahlua and Baily’s Cream, and a Dairy Free- Tropical Citrus with Dairy Free Almond Cream – all amazing, even those who couldn’t find a spot in their belly for one more taste, found space for these awesome deserts.  Visit Zopilites in San Bartolo 10:30-5:30 Sunday through Friday (closed Saturday).  Note:  2 for 1 Sundaes every Sunday!

El Minero from El Triunfo, a new addition to the Taste of East Cape, is the second of this year’s winning restaurants!  Off the heels of the Gastronomico event in El Triunfo, El Minero brought their signature Paella, which was absolutely scrumptious!  El Minero is open six days a week (closed on Tuesday) from 11 am to 5 pm.  Come on Sundays from 1:30 pm onwards for their Paella!  Note:  Sundays (Note:  not all – check the BPE for the most up to date) @ 1:00 you can attend the Piano Concert at El Triunfo Piano Museum featuring Angela Zanevsky, virtuoso and prodigy.

Smokey’s continues its reign in the winners’ circle – 4 years in a row!  Smokey’s Curing Company & Cantina brought one of the favorites from their new menu:  roasted beet arugula and spinach salad with goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, cranberries and walnuts, topped with a honey Dijon balsamic dressing.  I had this salad at the start of the evening and didn’t need anything more.  Happily, friends and my loving wife fed me bites of tastes from all the other restaurants.

Every restaurant brought amazing dishes!  I thank you all:  Aguacatering, Beans & Rice, Carmen’s Place, Casa Las Flores from Tres Palapas, Costa Palmas from La Ribera, El Gecko, Joe’s Pizza, La Casita, La Playa, La Providencia from La Ribera, Manolo’s BBQ, Pancho’s Café in El Marcado La Costa, and Pizza Gourmet from San Antonio (now here in Los Barriles).  The Taste of East Cape is an amazing event and – stating the obvious – we could not do it without you!  From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!

We had a bit of a hiccup at the start of this year’s Taste – as the provider for our tables and chairs, the La Paz Municipality, told us @ 4:00 that they were not coming.  With some amazing contributions from Marie Gonzales of Servifiestas, Hotel Las Palmas, and many people within this awesome community we had tables up by 5:30.  Albeit, it was somewhat hectic and we did not have as many tables as we planned for the event – our apologies for anyone who was not able to sit at a table and for any inconvenience this caused.  Overall, as successful as the event was, the highlight of the night for me was seeing everyone pitch in to help get us past this issue.  Thank you so much!

The evening wrapped up with an awesome performance by Revolving Door.  I still have Tom Petty’s “Last Dance with Mary Jane” in my head!

All-in-all, it was a great night!  Every Taste of the East Cape gets better than the last.  This was the best one Ever! – until next year… – gibson.ian@outlook.com
