time local Ila Buckley passed away peacefully in her home in Los
Barriles Mexico on March 15th, 2016.
Ila moved to Vail in 1967 and worked at Holly Vail,
then went on to open the 1st popcorn wagon at the base of the
mountain and then opened a second wagon in Lionshead. From there she
bought the Silver Buckle restaurant in West Vail and turned it into
an Italian restaurant called Torinos where you could go do your
laundry next door and have a slice and a beer while your at it. It
was a locals favorite!
She also bought a ranch in McCoy, enjoyed her horses
and tried her hand at ranching as a single woman, and from there
retired and moved to the Baja in the winters and spent summers in
the Vail Valley.
She was always the life of the party, it was always her
Birthday (Sept.7th), and she always managed to get large groups of
people to sing her Happy Birthday any time of the year. She loved
animals and was a huge advocate in Mexico with the foster caring of
cats and dogs (I know, even cats!), and headed up the spay neuter
clinics there. She had many friends in Mexico whom she swam with and
played cards with.
She was a mentor to so many people here in the Valley
and a true honest friend. She will be missed by many. A memorial
service will be held in the spring, date to be determined.

Rotario de Los Barriles
Children who live too far away to commute regularly to school, stay
weekdays in albergues, or dormitories, while attending classes.
Often there are little funds to maintain or improve the facilities,
and the children and their caretakers are forced to make do in less
than preferable conditions. Last weekend four Rotary Clubs from
California worked side by side with our Rotary members, and the
families of children who will benefit from the renovation of their
albergues. Truckee Noon and Breakfast Clubs, Nevada City Rotary
Club, Point West - Sacramento Rotary Club, and Fair Oaks Rotary Club
members pitched in to paint and repair the facilities in both La
Ribera and San Antonio.
The need to improve the quality of water in BCS has been clear for
many years, but the solution has not. There are 2,300 pueblos
with100 or less residents in Baja California Sur, and many of the
areas with the greatest need are located within our Los Barriles
service area. Working with Waves4Water, we are distributing a simple
gravity-fed filtration system capable of removing most
contaminations found on the Baja peninsula. To date we’ve
distributed 275 systems to individual ranchos in remote areas on the
eastern slopes of the Sierra Laguna range.
Later this month, fifteen teenagers and their chaperones arrive from
the Rotary Interact Club of Madera, CA, to spend their Spring Break
painting and delivering water filters to ranchos in the hills west
of San Bartolo.
