Deputy Secretary of State stresses Michele Thoren Bond coordination
in tourism and migrant workers
Mexico City, January 15, 2016 - Deputy Secretary of State for
Consular Affairs, Michele Thoren Bond, concluded his five-day visit
to Monterrey, Merida, Cancun and Mexico City today. The main purpose
of his trip was his participation in collaborative and productive
dialogue with the government Consular Mexico on Thursday, January
14, 2016. The Director General for the Protection of Mexicans Abroad
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Reyna Torres Mendivil
headed the Mexican delegation. Representatives of the Bureau of
Customs and Border Protection of the United States also
participated. The Consular Dialogue focused on strengthening joint
cooperation between the two countries to protect our citizens and
our common border, and to facilitate legitimate travel. Talks about
the obligation of consular notification and access were held, as
well as the intercountry adoption process, sharing practices for
crisis management, fraud prevention and coordinated care for
citizens of dual nationality of the United States and Mexico.
On 11 January, the Assistant Secretary Bond visited the Consulate
General of United States in Monterrey to highlight the consular
services available to US and Mexican citizens. The focus of his
visit was to help migrant workers, including ongoing efforts to
improve the visa application process for temporary agricultural
workers, and the efforts of the Consulate General to identify and
document the American children of migrant workers.
During his visit to Merida and Cancun for 12 and 13 January, the
Assistant Secretary Bond stressed the innovations of the Consulate
General of the United States in Merida and consular agencies in the
region to better assist American citizens who visit or live in the
Yucatan Peninsula. Bond Deputy Secretary met with representatives of
the Association of Hoteliers in Cancun and Puerto Morelos as well as
state and local tourism officials and civil protection efforts to
discuss hurricane preparedness.
During his visit to the US Embassy in Mexico City on 15 January, the
Assistant Secretary Bond attended coordinated by the Office of
Citizen Services, Migrant Care in the State of Hidalgo and the
municipality of event Chilcuautla to document the children born in
the United States now living in Mexico. The Assistant Secretary Bond
told the children they represent the growing culture of dual
citizenship which unites our countries even more.
