The following article was published 1-1-2015 and repeated today on Mexico News Daily.
Did you know this?  I didn't!
Mexico News Daily | Thursday, January 1, 2015
It will cost more to gas up today, but less to make some phone calls.
Effective today, there is no such thing as a long-distance charge for telephone calls within Mexico, from either fixed-line or cellular phones. Elimination of the charge came with federal telecommunications reforms.
Mexico’s dominant player in the telephone business took the new rules a step further this week by eliminating international long-distance charges as well. Carlos Slim’s Telmex made changes to its telephone and internet packages by dropping tariffs on worldwide long-distance calling.
It also included its video-on-demand service, ClaroVideo, as part of the packages, without additional cost. Those changes also take effect today.
Gas and diesel fuel went up today by 3%, based on the projected inflation rate. It will be the only increase this year.

Hello Cheryl & Dave..... from Harriett and Ben
Not all went well on this trip.......

Harriet's story....... Day 2 on the road in Baja... about 30 miles out of El Rosario we drove over a very bad bridge approach. The impact broke the u-bolts on our car trailer. The ones that broke were on the front left axle which allowed the axle to swing into the back axle tire!!! Ugh!! Ben pulled over as far as he could onto a non-existent parking spot...half on the road still. We looked at the damage; one tire completely shredded, and the other side out of line. Ben decided to walk up the road 50 yards, and found a spot that was wider, but how to get the trailer there? In the meantime, I was flagging traffic with one of our red dog blankets, and soon, a south bound Mexican car stopped, saw the problem, and said he'd tell his friend, who was just 5 minutes away. Thank goodness! In the mean time, we off-loaded the Model A to lighten the trailer, and by the time we'd moved the A up to the parking spot, our Mexican super-hero showed up! They are so clever and "make-do" with what you have. He agreed it would be good to move the trailer, and pointed to the come-along that we use to tie down the Model A when on the trailer. We had a spare, so used that one to straighten out the axle (pulling it forward to align it), and then driving very slowly to the wider parking spot. He then asked about the u-bolts and plates, and if we had recovered them. Nope. We didn't have them. He told us he would go back to his shop and get the necessary tools, and we noticed him driving very slow near the bridge. When he returned, it was in a different truck with a compressor in back so he could use his air tools. Ben had jacked up the trailer with our handy (big) Jack, and our llantera guy had a new very large U-bolt to replace the two broken ones. He'd found the metal plate from the trailer by the bridge, so he knew how big to make the replacement. He took off the shredded tire, put on the make-do u bolt, and put on our spare. Then when he was ready to move his little truck so we could reload the Model A, it wouldn't start....so, we helped him push it down the road! It still didn't start, so he told Ben no problem, he could do it, and got under the hood to tweak it just to right (all in the wrong lane of traffic!) Anyhow, he got it started, reversed back to where we were, and watched us load the A back on on the trailer. He was very impressed with our old car, and was a pleasure to work with! So... manana we'll be visiting the tire store her in El Rosario to try and find another spare, and then on to San Quintin to repair the trailer. Good thing we're not on a strict time-line. PS. I got to practice my Spanish again today, as our hero spoke no English!

Traveling Baja is always an adventure!! We've had flat tires before, but never this experience!

Part 2.......

Hallelujah!!! This morning we went to San Borja Llantera here in El Rosario, which was recommended by our fix-it Angel on the road. He had all the tires we needed. (Note by Ben: These tires are NOT available in Baja. I tried to by new tires about a year ago at one of the large tire shops in La Paz. They did not have them, and said that they could not order them from the USA. This tire shop had 5 new tires, which were exactly what I needed.) He mounted them under cover of their shop, since it was raining pretty good by then. Then Ben asked where in San Quintin we should go to replace the u bolts. He said...go to Oscar, right here in town! Oscar came over, checked it out, and said yes, he could do it. Then he sent over his assistant to measure, and that guy was so enamored with our woody, I was thinking the work would never get done! We drove the 150 feet to his "shop" (piles of equipment under a pepper tree, ) unhooked the trailer, and went to breakfast.. He hopes to be done shortly!!! Hooray. Looks like we'll cross the border today after all, just a bit later than we planned originally!
Praise God for His amazingly perfect answers to prayers.
Pictures to follow, when I can get them downloaded.

Road Report for Northern Baja:

We left San Diego at 6am yesterday, Tuesday,  and arrived Santa Rosalia a couple hours after it got dark....because we had to wait a couple hours in San Ignacio for a local to transport our car across 5' deep arroyo waters.
Beautiful drive, assisted (wasn't as hot) by the could cover most of the way. We leave this morning and should arrive the LB area layer this afternoon.
Just wanted to provide some feedback, in case you guys wanted to post those road conditions at least for the northern part of Baja.

ANSWERS - DISCUSSIONS-

Electricity Discussion:

1)  Bill’s computer was killed.......... Kinda strange, as we do have a “voltage controller” on our breaker box.............but I know nothing about electricity.  ”What electronics were destroyed? What can we do to protect our appliances, modems, electronics, for next time?”
