NOTE:  After reading the notices below I think it's pretty safe to say that the East Cape did pretty darn lucky compared to Cabo and San Jose.  I also talked at length this evening with Kathy Catalano who lives at Juanita's Gardens.  She has been able to traverse much of the local area and did not seen any major devastation but there is a ton of debris and a lot of clean up to do.  Tio's and Pisces are open.  Pisces even has liver and onions! She was able to buy water at Chapito's.  Kathy also offered if you need her to check on your house in the Los Barriles area, call her land line about 9am to 2pm as the generator is turned off.  Her number is 624-141-0530.
The next big question after Polo makes his pass will be the roads.  Please send road reports from the border to Cabo.

Hurricane Reports

a.  Update from Los Barriles. Water across the Buenas Aires Arroyo has stopped flowing. Concrete road is passable with some cracks. Lot's of downed trees and trash everywhere. Tree fell on the local butchers house, no significant damage. Gas rationing at the local Pemex station. Some cell phones working. Spotty internet only if you have Aux Power. Land Lines work if you have the old fashioned plug into the phone jack - power comes from the Phone Shack. One report has a huge number of power poles down between the two major cities which could slow power restoration.

  • President Peņa Nieto is in La Paz with his cabinet.
  • The road to La Paz is passable but it's down to one lane.
  • Food is running out fast, most of the stores have been looted.
  • The mexican government started to airlift the more than 30,000 stranded tourists from Cabo to Tijuana, Mazatlan, Guadalajara and Mexico City in government and commercial airplanes free of charge since yesterday.
  • The Cabo airport is not working with the exception of government flights.
  • La Paz airport is working, some tourists are driving up to La Paz to take a plane.
  • David Flores, our editor in Cabo has counted 75 Electric Poles that are down on the ground, he says the real number could be more than double that.
  • There are 200 CFE trucks on their way to Cabo from mainland Mexico and northern Baja
  • The mexican government and different associations are flying in food to La Paz, the government will be distributing the food.
  • There is only one single OXXO in Cabo that hasn't been looted.
  • There is a collpased bridge south of Los Barriles so nobody can get to San Jose from Los Barriles.
  • You probably won't hear from your loved ones in Cabo or La Paz until the power grid is restored, this doesn't mean something bad happened to them, there is just no communication.

c.  Reminder, anyone going to the East Cape, take mosquito spray!

d.  I've just gotten off the phone with Omar Araiza at the East Cape Casas & RV Resort. The base phones that have an attached handset work on and off. In typical optimistic and resourceful Mexican fashion, he keeps saying "We were so lucky; it could have been a lot worse in the East Cape". Here is what else he said: No electricity for 2 to 4 weeks; because the storm went over top of the mountains, the big poles there are down and need to be replaced. The new poles are coming from the Mainland, and CFE is dispatching all resources possible to the Baja. Because there is no electricity, unfortunately there is also no city water service. He says this could become a bigger problem quickly. The arroyos are calmed now and there's just a bit of water still running in the Las Cuevas and San Bartolo arroyos. Chapito's is open with generators. Pemex has fuel, although the line is at least an hour long. The banks are closed and there is no money available in town. Omar's wife Vanessa works at Bancomer and she'll be noticed as soon as that changes. The beachfront resorts of Palmas de Cortez and Playa del Sol did not sustain any damage. As Liz from Rancho La Venta said, the bridge at Las Cuevas collapsed and currently there is no traffic from that point south to San Jose. There was damage to all the big box stores including Costco, Home Depot, Walmart. When the storm hit there wasn't a big tidal influence as there can be and so the beaches were not changed; the turtle nursery is intact, although all the markers blew away. He says people are calm, out and about in town as normal during our September season. The skies are clear, although summertime afternoon storm clouds have formed over the mountains - something he says the people who live there won't really be needing more rain! Once again, Omar says "It could have been worse. We were really lucky." Personally, I'm feeling grateful and hopeful. Theresa combertheresa@hotmail.com

e.    The main storm surge came at night and after power went out, so nothing much to see during that dark and stormy night.
The bridge at Cuaduaņa is said to have collapsed (haven't seen that yet) but the road to La Paz is supposedly open now.  There were lots of rocks and such past the BA bridge on the hillside going up to the over look of the San Bartolo arroyo but the lane opposite the hill was clear and most of that debris is now moved.  Santa Cruz was passable today into La Ribera, but the beach road lost about 12 feet just past the entrance to the marina.
nternet was out for 30+ hours or so after Odile headed north and cut the fiber optic lines around Mulege, but seems to have returned now along with long distance calling. Tuesday only had local land line calls.
Cell service still seems to be mostly gone as of now. If you need to make a call from the states, call someone you know with a land line number as those seem to be working now.  Or email, but people will need generator power to get the latter.

The San Bartolo Arroyo

f.  Los Barriles:
Arroyos are open now, have quit running.  Two hour wait for fuel. CadoQuno-water park area bridge closed.  Hermosa Vista neighborhood has phone service, not sure how wide spread phone service is, but people can try to call in now. No injuries or deaths reported. No windows out, lots of trees and palapas down.  Rumored that power won't be up for 2 weeks.

g.  Those of us in the southern half of of the East Cape are looking for information on road conditions between here (Vinorama) and La Ribera and Los Barriles. We are also looking for information on whether there is food available in the stores in La Ribera or Los Barriles. We have a lot of people out here who will need food supplies very soon. Thank you.  Dawn Pier dawn@dawnpier.com

h.  My sister and I are looking for information on Carl Hoffman, he's a Buena Vista resident.
We're very sorry for what you are all going through as a result of this storm. Any information you have would be great. We'd like to know if he's okay. He was supposed to fly out of Los Cabos today to the States, and that's clearly not happening. Thank you,

i.  Since there's so little news from LB, I will pass this along. We got a text via satellite phone from our Mexico neighbor. She said, "Your casa is bueno. no power or water. Bad one."
Our house is by the cemetery and very exposed. We have plywood on most windows, and two palapa covered porches. Annalisa

j.  It's reported CFE is sending 200+ men along with heavy equipment to the Baja!
