TOES ON THE TARMAC!! October 8, 2014
1) Happy to announce that Joanna Rinaldi is a winner of
a BPE sticker for being the first to report she put her toes on the
tarmac at SDJ today, Alaska Airlines, SFO>LAX>SJD. She
said there was also a United flight from Houston. They were
processed in T-2, pushed the red/green light as instructed but it
didn't seem to light up. All is getting good.
2) Jack also wins a sticker for this beautiful
descriptive report!!
Amazing!!! So with quite a bit of trepidation, I
headed down to LA to attempt to fly to the airport at Cabo San
Lucas. The airport has been closed to international flights since
the hurricane hit, and my flight was to be the first international
flight in to SJD. I booked this flight on Alaska Airlines 5 months
ago - pure happenstance that this turned out to be the first flight
into SJD.
Driving down the 405 through LA was all fucked up, and took me over
3 hours from Santa Barbara. I did not arrive at LAX until almost 9
AM for my scheduled 10:10 departure. And, I had 5 boxes/bags and a
dog to check! Alaska folks got it done, and I was at the gate with
10 minutes to spare.
The flight down was as normal - beautiful views of the
peninsula, with lots of stormy clouds mid way from the latest
tropical depression.
As we approached SJD, the scenery was quite beautiful, with the
desert and mountains vivid green. The arroyos are still flowing,
lots lot water!
The mood on the plane was festive, conversations loud and
boisterous. As we touch down, a spontaneous hooping and clapping
began, obvious that all on board were aware of the specialness of
this first flight into SJD. Very cool, but the best was yet to
come……
I was sitting on a left side window seat, and as we
approached the jetway, I could see lots of ground personnel taking
photos and clapping, with lots of “thumbs up” directed to us. Very
cool, still the best was yet to come…..
As we walked up the jetway, I could hear hoots and
clapping… Upon reaching the terminal building, there was a tunnel of
airport employees clapping and yelling, high-fiveing all the
passengers as we departed. Some were handing out ice-cold coronas
and water, all were handed a bag with t-shirt and other goodies, and
a mariachi band was playing off to the side!!! It was truly a
touching experience - I have never felt so welcomed.
The trip through customs was uneventful, with the
red/green button functioning as usual. I will say that today was the
fastest I have ever made it though that process, but your results
will vary I am sure…
I had arranged transport to Los Barriles 5 months ago
on the eco-baja shuttle, but had not been able to contact them, and
assumed a $100 cab ride was on the agenda. Nope - the shuttle was
there, waiting for me. Simple and easy.
Everything at Verdugos is good. My palapa is fine, needs a
good cleaning (tomorrow, Smokey’s tonight). Sat down with Martin for
half an hour at the bar, all good there.
Looking forward to fresh fish for dinner in the near
future….. Jack Whaley

Baseball Fans:
With life going back to a more normal basis in the East Cape, we
think this is an important diversion for the kids, who have been
through hard times since the hurricane. For those that did not see
my last post, we are trying to put on a Baseball Day Camp in
Campomento. Due to the hurricane, we have had to postponed the camp
to either November 17 ,18 or 19 or 24, 25, or 26, 2014 (exact date
to come soon!), from 9am – 4pm at Campomento. We will teach the
basics like hitting, catching, throwing and the rules. But to do
this, we need equipment, and it is expensive and hard to come by
down there.
We, with support from the Art Association, are trying
to put together gear that could be left at one central location/home
near the Campomento, Las Cuevas and Santa Cruz schools. To do that,
we need basic equipment. Bats, balls and mitts. We have had donated
to us catcher gear and batting helmets, but still need the basics!
If everyone could each go through their home (or catch a garage
sale/thrift store) and bring down extra baseball gear, we would have
plenty! So, we are asking if you
could bring down mitts or bats and ball or two, we would have enough
to gear up the three schools.
The kids here love baseball, and what a chance to help them
out! Who knows, we could have a Luis Cruz (Yankees) or an Adrian
Gonzalez (Dodgers) right here in the East Cape area!
We are also looking for helpers, Spanish not required
to help. It will be a great time for all who are involved. More
details will follow in the future BPE’s.
For more information contact Chris Courtright at
jonandchris@juno.com.
We hope to arrive around Oct 19th – with road allowing!

a. Ants like to 'come in' during Fall and
Winter............. if you e-mail me I will send you:
ways (10 of them) to effectively kill or deter ants naturally
sunsetmorghan@yahoo.com
b. Bees: I was recently successful getting bees to
move, I did not want to kill them last ones I had time and found a
bee keeper, but these were sharing my outdoor kitchen with me so
needed to take faster action. They moved in right after the
hurricane. So figured they did not like the wind. So I set up a high
power squirrel cage blower aiming at their entryway. I could do this
in the evening because they are not real active at night. But
waiting till the morning when active and had a long extension cord
plugged into it and then at the far end plugged it in where they
could not see me. After a few minutes I got the guts to look around
a distant corner and sure enough I could tell the ones coming back
were not pleased. And left it on all day and night and turned it off
the next morning and sure enough they did not like hurricane Dean
and had moved on…. Good luck and if it works for ya please post it
on my site where I keep these Baja methods online for people to
search and find.

b. Last season I had no problems
accessing my accounts at Bancomer using my Mac or Apple IPAD. And
was able to access my accounts with no problems. Today, I could not
get into my accounts. So, I finally called Miguel, the Manager at
Bancomer, Los Barriles, and he informed me that Bancomer no longer
accepts Mac Computers, does not accept Firefox, and you have to use
Google to get into any of your Bancomer accounts. I don’t know what
I will do as both my computers are Macs and iPads. They are the
safest around as far as being compromised by hackers. Does anyone
else have any problems accessing Bancomer with their Apple products?

b.
While the world was watching looters and bad people running amok in
Los Cabos after Odile, the people of Los Barriles, Buena Vista etc.
were digging out, cleaning up, and helping others. The day after the
hurricane, Cafe Maria and Maria's mini mart were open, running on
generator. We had no city services, phone, or internet, but could
get killer huevos rancheros! When we went to Chapitos I was thinking
it would be like a disaster movie, but we saw stocked shelves,
smiling faces and people asking "how are you?","did you have much
damage?" and "do you need help?". Jimmy and I wish to thank everyone
here for the graciousness, caring, and honesty we saw everyday.
Paradise may be a little raggedy right now but it definitely still
exists. Sincerely, Chris and Jimmy White, Casa Rosa
