Bancomer also put up its
rates without informing its non resident customers.
Similarly to the people who posted recently about two other banks,
when I got back to Baja last fall, went to my Bancomer branch and
checked my peso account status, I found that for the previous 7
months they had been charging me a monthly fee AND PENALTY. By that
time, these totalled the equivalent of USD 250! When I had left Baja
the previous spring, I had checked that my balance was above the
minimum for avoiding the fees, but the following week Bancomer
increased that minimum by 1,000 pesos without notifying me. I put in
a written complaint at my branch, and at the main branch, and was
eventually reimbursed in full. Two friends with Bancomer accounts
also provided a written statement that they would close their
accounts if this unfair practice was not corrected, and that helped
too (thanks again, guys!). The way to avoid this happening to you is
to get set-up online so you can check your account a every couple of
months. And get the phone number of a person at your bank,
English-speaking if necessary, whom you can ask to sort out anything
strange. Also, be aware that your account can be suspended for
non-activity after one year (less with some banks). After 5 years of
non-activity, any money still in the account automatically reverts
to the Mexican government.

Liability Insurance is required in Mexico? The minimum required by
the Government for Liability Car Insurance in Mexico is not
regulated. The awards for third-party personal injury and property
damage, or a fatality, vary from State to State. These awards have
been significantly increased and are the point of a lot of
discussion. None-the-less, in the case of an accident where the
extent of damage is beyond the limit of the insurance you carry, you
could be liable for the excess amount. FOR YOUR GLOVE BOX,
CHECKLIST: 1. Copy of your insurance policy in Spanish. 2. If your
car is U.S. registered, then a copy of your U.S. Driver’s License,
laminated, and the original in your wallet or purse. You can get a
laminated copy at Chapitos. 3. It is a good idea to have the English
version of your policy in the glove box, so you can point out the
coverage amounts. 4. Make a page with the contact information for
reporting an accident and the phone number of your agent. 5. You are
going to need a second form of ID, such as your passport,
immigration card, or visa. In general, it's best to secure the same
amount of Liability Coverage as you have back in the U.S. Coverage
