East Cape Recycling Baja had a
GREAT summer with three important environmental education workshops.
Possible in great part to your participation in our fundraising
efforts!
1) This summer we created a recycling environmental education music
program for Cursos de Verano (summer day-camp) for the local kids
(80 kids total, ages 6-12). Sofia with WILDCOAST/COSTASALVAjE
introduced us to Pablo Ruiz from San Jose, our drummer and maestro
for our program. The kids made recycled instruments from buckets,
tin cans, 5 gallon water bottles, individual water bottles and metal
beer bottle caps. Pablo created and directed a fabulous percussion
program that included a “call to action” song in Spanish The rough
translation is:
We separate garbage
We fulfill the need
We protect nature
We respect our sea
We are the children of 'percubetas'
We must be ever vigilant
We care about the environment
We are the protectors
We give recycling lessons
“Percubetas’ is a Spanish portmanteau, that means drums (percussion)
made from buckets.
The kids were fantastic!!!! You can watch the final performance on

Special thanks to our Cursos de Verano volunteers Renee Lagloire,
Janinie Barnes Webb, Erica Martz; Kathy Obenshain for helping with
the Recycling Contest; Lorena and Norma for recycling fabric scraps
that we used to decorate the instruments; Bob Rosa and Adrian for
help making the stick tambourines; and many people in the community
who recycled materials for the program.
2) East Cape Recycling Baja sponsored ‘Solo para Mujeres’ (For Women
Only) a special 8 hour environmental workshop over two days. Sofia
Gomez with WILDCOAST/COSTASALVAjE taught the local women how to
separate inorganic waste and recycle plastic, metal,
cardboard/paper, glass and EPS 6 foam (packaging for appliances).
The women made wonderful craft projects from recyclable materials
and learned how to compost organic waste to be used to supplement
the soil and make their gardens beautiful. The program was a great
success and we have had requests and plan to repeat the program in
the fall.
3) Francie Olachea invited East Cape Recycling Baja to participate
in a special Off-Road Racing program for the local kids. Off-Road
Race sponsor Manolo Nuñoz and our Los Barriles race car drivers
attended with their race cars to teach the kids about off-road
racing. East Cape Recycling Baja discussed the importance of the
spectators cleaning up their trash from the arroyos and beaches upon
leaving the race, to protect our environment and the responsibility
of each of us to help sustain our local economy that depends and
thrives on keeping our beaches and ocean clean. Sr. Nuñoz made a
commitment to work with East Cape Recycling Baja to ensure that
there are trash barrels available along the spectator areas of the
future race routes and help educate spectators about using them. We
created a bumper sticker, that translated says "I Care for My
Beaches” and distributed them at this event. Many were attached to
the off-road race cars. The bumper stickers are free. If you would
like one, please email us at
info@eastcaperecyclingbaja.com and we will see that you
get one when we return in October.
We are very proud of all that was accomplished this summer. Please
help us and continue to do your part. REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE and
keep our community clean and beautiful. We will see you in the fall.

===========================================
What success! This summer's Cursos de Verano was greeted with
anticipation and enthusiasm by the 80 children participating in East
Cape Recycling Baja's environmental program. I want to personally
thank and acknowledge Holly Burgin, who worked tirelessly and
relentlessly, often in the blazing sun and hot, humid conditions,
not just for the three weeks of summer camp but for weeks in advance
to assure that every detail was attended and that the entire program
was managed and supervised to it's fullest success. I have great
respect and appreciation for her commitment to these children, their
culture and their future. The best news to share with you? Change is
happening; the messages we are communicating to respect our
environment and cherish it's resources are setting; these children
are creating a new ethos and embracing a philosophy that will surely
have positive and profound effects on our local environment. This
culture of environmental concern and care will grow around us and
them as they mature and move into the world. I'm immensely proud to
be associated with Holly and in awe of her directing of the 2014
summer program. On behalf of our businesses, we are also pleased to
be participating and able to help support the program by hosting it
at our East Cape Casas & RV Resort. Along with Shaun, Omar, my staff
and our captains, Baja’s Awesome Sportfishing was proud once again
to take along 14 winners of the Recycling Contest aboard 'Awesome'
and 'Too Awesome' for a day of fishing to experience the beautiful
Sea of Cortez. Please visit our facebook page Baja's Awesome
Sportfishing for photos! With gratitude, Theresa Comber and crew.
